Whom do you know?

Hello everyone,

Our reading group is currently reading chapters 8 - 11. What an incredible amount of tea Mortenson has been drinking in order to get a school built. There's been an interesting amount of activities and bartering taking place. I don't know if I'd have that much patience or enjoy drinking that much tea. :) Following along in the book you'll discover that in these chapters you're bouncing back and forth between events in California and Pakastan in the matter of a few sentences. Be sure to focus on the reading.....the journey is always exciting.

Question #1
Have you ever known anyone like Mortenson? Have you ever had the experience of making a difference yourself through acts of leadership, aid or generosity?

Please click on the "Comment" link below to share your thoughts. NOTE: Your post will be scanned before actually posting - this may take several hours. I'll post another question midweek.

Happy reading!
Lauri

  1. There are some folks I know who have a few of the same characteristics as Mortenson but it is difficult for me to say that I’ve met someone who embodies all his characteristics! Nike’s campaign: "Just do it" accurately reflects how Mortenson lives his life — at least through the reading I’ve completed. He has no fear and doesn’t want to ever have to deal with any kind of remorse. He purposefully chooses to live his life out loud! That must be quite a feeling. Something for me to reach for in my own life!

Yes, there is continued growth in this area of focus in my life including how to lead, provide aid, or show generosity to others. I find these moments to be purposeful, fun, heart-warming, and humbling all at the same time. The greatest thing that I continue to learn about making a difference is that no gift (whether monetary or of time and talents) is too small.

A recent experience was during the Girl Scouts cookie sale. A display was set up at an area business and we bought a box of cookies to enjoy. We took it a step further by challenging the scouts that were there to help us with a very special project. We purchased another box of cookies and asked them to share that box with someone they most felt might need a little bit of a boost that day. We encouraged them to watch for folks who would really enjoy this surprise. While we will never know the impact, we recognize that this was a moment that our actions encouraged those young scouts to make someone else’s day — a modern day “pay it forward” moment.

So, making a difference continues to take on new meaning for us in our daily lives and the best way we can share that is by encouraging others to think about the opportunities that await them — it's there if they choose to pay attention to the surrounding environment.

  2. I have never met a person with such conviction that they were willing to put their own life on the line for the cause. Many soldiers and explorers did so because they believed in freedom and wanted to make the world better. Greg is the kind of person who puts the needs of others before his own and has written a book worthy of praise and ultimatly is promoting peace in the world.
